XLRI Holds a Workshop on Drama and Story Telling

Theme: "The Creative and Critical: Transforming through Creative Learning"

The Centre for Peace and Justice, XLRI and Centre for Research and Training in Educational Leadership organised a two days Drama and Storytelling Workshop 'The Creative & The Critical: Transforming Through Creative Learning' by a world-renowned theatre artist, playwright, actor and master story-teller Mr. Daniel Kelin from the Honolulu Theatre, USA and also affiliated with the National School of Drama, Agartala.

The theme of the workshop was "The Creative and Critical: Transforming through Creative Learning". Daniel was welcomed by a group of Santhali dancers from Jamshedpur and girls from the local Sacred Heart Community College followed by a formal inauguration in the presence of Fr. Francis Peter, S.J., Professor Paramjyot Singh and Sister Valsa.

The workshop was attended by teachers from various schools around Jamshedpur like KPS Schools located in Gamharia, Mango, Kadma, Burma Mines and NML. Other schools were JH Tarapore, Jusco School South Park, Kasidih High School, Sacred Heart Convent, Gulmohur School and Loyola School,Baripada. The participating students of Loyola College of Education and Carmel Community College felt deeply inspired by Mr. Daniel Kelin's use of innovative techniques to make drama and story-telling an integral part of their teaching-learning tools and create high impact environment for students.

At XLRI Daniel also interacted with the Dracula drama group and GMP students on using drama and theatre as a tool to break free of inhibitions and develop new theatre techniques. The students were fascinated by his storytelling and teaching of the art of writing a script, planning a drama and developing the plot.

Professor Paramjyot Singh, Chairperson, Centre for Peace and Justice, XLRI Jamshedpur, said, "The theatre workshop was indeed a very successful one. The participating teacher and student community got a deep understanding that making drama and story-telling an integral part of the teaching-learning tools can create a high impact environment for students. Participants got the opportunity to interact with a distinguished Fulbright Academic and Professional Excellence Awardee Daniel Kelin. We at Centre for Peace and Justice, XLRI are extremely happy to host this workshop."

Daniel Kelin has trained tens of thousands of school children and teachers through creative engagement of drama and storytelling both in India and USA. He makes a special connection with India by saying, "He is a man of birth in the USA and his soul is in India".
