XLRI - RBS Double Masters Programme - Queries

About Admissions/Tests/Eligibility

Can you explain the eligibility for the program in clear terms?

Since the program involves the second year at the Rutgers Business School, US, the eligibility becomes stricter for the 3 years Bachelor’s degree from Indian universities. If it is a 3-year Indian degree, then it must be from a NAAC Accredited institution with a minimum A rating and preferably a First Class. However, for a four-year degree like engineering from engineering institutions like NIT, IITs and other institutions, it is not mandatory, and they are eligible to apply without NAAC Accreditation.

Can those with a CA or an ICWAI and an ACS apply for this program?

Yes. Since they are already recognized as professional degrees for the purpose of higher education, they are eligible to apply.

Can diploma graduates apply for this program?

Graduates with 3-year diplomas are not eligible to apply. However, if a candidate has a four-year diploma in engineering that is recognized by a university or a Deemed-to-be University, then he/she is eligible to apply.

Is work experience a must?

No. It is not a must. However, to get the best advantage of the program contents, coverage and pedagogy, it is encouraged. Sponsored candidates from the industry are encouraged to apply.

What if a student doesn’t meet the eligibility to apply for the second year at RBS?

It is a risk that a student should take responsibility for. There are institute norms that govern such cases that are similar to our PG Program in XLRI.

Is there any Admissions Test for this program? What is the Selection Process? What are the cut off scores?

For this year’s admission, there is no Admissions Test. However, candidates are required to furnish the latest two years’ best scores of XAT, GMAT, GRE, GATE or any other quality tests that are approved by XLRI for admission.

After the applications are received by the last date announced by XLRI, the selection criteria will be based on these test scores, and cut off scores will be decided. Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview.

In its pursuit of academic excellence, XLRI actively encourages students from diverse backgrounds. While preparing the short-listed candidates for the interview, XLRI may factor in academic background and the relevant work experience in addition to the submitted test scores. For the final selection, besides performance in the personal interviews (and/or group discussions), we consider the test scores performance, relevant work experience, academic background, extracurricular activities.

Is there any criteria for admission to Rutgers Business School after the first year courses at XLRI?

Students who are admitted to this program are required to have a minimum CQPI of 4 out of 8 at the end of the first year to be eligible to go to the second year. Then they have to apply to RBS as mentioned in the pages 12 and 13 of the prospectus.

Is there any prerequisite for starting this course? If yes, what should be done?

There is no preparation required as such except basic mathematics aptitude and communication skills. All the management courses will be taught from the basics and students will receive a good coverage of core and advanced topics in management and supply chain management areas. There will be an orientation program for all the admitted students at the start of the program which will prepare the students for the program.

About Advantages from the Program:

What is unique about this Double Master’s Program on Supply Chain Management and Supply Chain Analytics offered by XLRI in international partnership with Rutgers Business School (RBS), US and why should anyone enroll in this program?

PGDM in Logistics & Supply Chain Management from XLRI, Jamshedpur & MS in Supply Chain Analytics (MSCA) from Rutgers Business School, US is a Double Master’s Program from two highly ranked institutions that have centers of excellence in supply chain and operations. The program is designed to provide students a fundamental understanding of logistics and supply chain management from a global perspective. Students will acquire professional competencies in supply chain management, materials management & logistics, and an in-depth understanding of supply chain analytics enhancing their knowledge, job skills and self-enrichment. This highly competitive program is best suited for those with a mindset to apply analytics to supply chain fields and be future supply chain leaders. The program offers an opportunity to earn two master’s degrees at the same time.

Such an offering, wherein two Masters degrees are possible from two venerable and reputed institutions in just two years, is not available in any other institution in India. That is the uniqueness of this program. Moreover, the respective degrees are recognized as a PGDM by the AICTE in India and as an MS Degree in the US.

What is the advantage of this double Masters Program in Supply Chain Management and Supply Chain Analytics?

The advantages are as follows:

Tuition benefit for students
  • A student of PGDM at XLRI usually spends 6 terms with an estimated cost of about Rs.30 lakhs while Cohort in this program will spend only the first 3 terms in XLRI and thus saving an additional 3 terms in the second year of a regular program and an estimated saving of Rs. 15 lakhs fee in XLRI Jamshedpur
  • A regular student in the MSCA at RBS program typically graduates in 3 semesters (September – December of next year). while a student in this cohort will be eligible to graduate in 2 semesters (September – May of next year) thus saving approximately $15,000 - $21,000 in tuition, living and other expenses in the US.
  • So, with this shortened duration, Cohort in this program receives the benefit of two Masters degrees in two years duration and thus saving on tuition fee and other expenses if spent independently on two respective programs. This is possible with the MoU between XLRI and RBS and the credit transfer arrangement between them.
Strong industry exposure to students
  • Internship in India through SIP
  • Industry client project in the U.S.
  • Rutgers is located in an area with strong industry presence in logistics, pharma, finance, retail, fashion, etc. (corporate partners include Bayer, BD, Coca-Cola, Dell, Deloitte, J&J, Merck, Pfizer, UPS, etc.)
International exposure for students to prepare them for success
  • Full experience of U.S. metro areas (NYC, DC, Philadelphia)
  • STEM OPT as per prevailing rules upon graduation in the U.S.

Can you explain what the STEM-OPT option is and other details?

The MS-Supply Chain Analytics (MSCA) program at Rutgers is a STEM-(Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics)-designated program. As such, graduates from the program are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) upon graduation as per prevailing rules of OPT Visas in the US.

OPT is a temporary employment directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study and is commensurate with the level of education being sought. An F-1 student may be authorized 12 months of OPT for study at one education level. An F-1 student with a degree majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) may apply for an extension of an additional 24-month OPT, while in a valid period of post-completion OPT as per current rules that may or may not change in the future.

Detailed requirements of the OPT are available here: https://myrun.newark.rutgers.edu/optional-practical-training-opt-0.

F1 students in the MSCA program should directly consult Rutgers Office of International Student and Scholar Services (OISS) regarding their I-20, F1 visa, OPT, and other related issues. The OISS-Newark website is: https://myrun.newark.rutgers.edu/oiss.

In what kind of companies and industries will the student be able to apply his/her learning?

The program focuses on logistics, supply chain management and analytics. The application of this knowledge will be in product based companies, FMCG and core products companies, process based companies, some service companies like ITES and Consulting.

What is the perception of this course in the industry?

Since the program is unique with a combination of LSCM and Supply Chain analytics and since supply chain management is seen as an important area especially after the Covid pandemic, the program seems to be of importance and will be well received. Initial discussions with a few industries have given good encouragement of the initiative of XLRI.
