XLRI JRD Tata Foundation in Business Ethics

XLRI, in association with a few select Tata Group Companies, established in 1991 the JRD Tata Foundation in Business Ethics, to espouse their long-standing commitment and contribution to business ethics in India. The foundation seeks to address itself by publicly affirming the urgent need for upholding ethics in all spheres of business and the need to bring about a suitably favorable culture in which it can thrive. JRD Tata, himself a role model par excellence, delivered the first oration in 1991 and was known throughout his life to proclaim and live one challenge: Ask not just what is legal, but go beyond, and ask, is it the right thing to do? Part of this foundation is the JRD Tata Chair in Business Ethics at XLRI for the advancement of research in this field.

The first occupant to JRD Tata Chair Professor in Business Ethics, XLRI, was Mr. Prakash L. Tandon (1997-2000) followed by Fr Ignatius Puthiadam, S.J. (March 2000-2004), Mr Sarosh J. Ghandy (2004-2009). And Fr. Oswald Mascarenhas S.J. (2009-2022) Since 2022 Fr Kuruvilla Pandikattu SJ occupies this prestigious chair of JRD Tata Chair Professor of Business Ethics.

Currently, the foundation is engaged in teaching Managerial Ethics/ Business Ethics/ Corporate Ethics as a standalone core course to all junior students in HRM (three sessions), BM (three sessions), GMP (two sessions) and Weekend batch (one session). It has also floated a new elective Ethics of Business Turnaround Management, since 2017 which is currently running in two sessions for senior students. The foundation offers several MDPs like Putting People First, Resolving Management Dilemma, Powering Executive Leadership with Ethics and Morals; In-company programs like Value Ethics (VE) and Organizational Ethics Culture Building (OECB) for NHPC, Pillars of Indian Oil Vision (Ethics, environment, Customer, People, technology, Innovation) for Executives of IOCL, Gurgaon, Developing Organization Ethics Culture (OEC) for Bank of Baroda (BoB), Mumbai, Building Ethical and Moral Leadership Skills for Tata Power SED, Bangalore, Putting People First: Ethical Leadership on Values, Respectful Workspace and Ethical Decision Making for Tata Steel Executives, Jamshedpur, Building Ethical and Moral Awareness Culture for Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Sambalpur, Building Transformational Leadership Program for Sipradi, Kathmandu, and Value Thinking for MSc students of SJIM, Bangalore.

The foundation has designed a new application technique for diagnosing corporate fraud, the LEMS technique (Legality, Ethicality, Morality, and Spirituality). This technique proposes a four-fold lens for checking and developing the humanizing content of executive decisions. Several Institutional ethics programs are currently planning to adopt LEMS principles including Indo German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC), Mumbai, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Indian Navy, Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL), Bangalore, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML), Bangalore.

The foundation hopes to attract highly qualified faculty in Business Ethics for teaching both the standalone core course as well as electives in Applied Business Ethics. With additional faculty, we plan to update and reinforce Business Ethics curriculum, MDP programs in Corporate Ethics, In-company programs in Business Ethics, conduct Scientific Qualitative and Quantitative Research in Business Ethics itself, as well as undertake Industry based Organizational Ethics Research Projects.
