The Executive Fellow Programme in Management (EFPM) is a non-residential doctoral programme offering studies in different fields of management and functional areas. The programme has been designed to cater to the scholarly needs of working executives, managers, faculty members and researchers, who are unable to commit to a full-time residential doctoral study. The programme trains its students to become skilled and innovative researchers and teachers in management. It aims at preparing students for careers as faculty members at premier academic institutions and for positions outside academics requiring advanced research and analytical capabilities.
The EFPM offered by XLRI Jamshedpur is recognized as equivalent to the Ph.D. programme of an Indian University by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
The EFPM at XLRI is an intense and rigorous study programme that typically takes about five years. Only those who are reasonably certain that they can devote enough time regularly to such a study, alongside their occupational and personal responsibilities, must apply for this programme.

Degree / Diploma / Certificate holders through part-time, correspondence, private appearance, or satellite-based programmes are not eligibile for applying to the EFPM.

Executive FPM students will complete 11-12 courses conducted in the XLRI Jamshedpur campus, over four campus visits, spread over a period of about 2 years. Each campus visit is of about 20 days duration. Besides the campus visits, at least 3-5 additional campus visits will normally be needed. These visits are meant for the Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (CQE), presenting a research seminar, presenting and defending the thesis proposal and for defending the thesis.
At the end of the coursework, the FPM student must appear in and pass the Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (CQE) that tests the student’s learning obtained from the coursework and their preparedness for rigorous academic research. The student is given two chances to pass the CQE, failing which s/he will be asked to withdraw from the programme.
The EFPM student is expected to complete the programme in about 5 years. The maximum permissible time for the completing the programme completion is 8 years. Students failing to complete the requirements within this time period will be deemed to have withdrawn from the program and their candidature in the programme will be closed.
The total fees for the entire programme is Rs. 10,70,000/- payable in four instalments. The institute reserves the right to collect the service tax from the students in addition to the fees as applicable. The above fee does not include board and lodge charges during campus visits, which will be charged separately.
The student is conferred the title "Fellow in Management" of XLRI on successful completion of all the requirements of the programme.
